Holmes Heads Back To State

Bulldogs beat CovCath in regional final

Holmes defeated Covington Catholic in the Ninth Region championship game and the outcome was decidedly different from their first two meetings this season.

The Bulldogs defeated the Colonels 64-50 last night at Conner High School to win their second straight regional title and third in the past four years.

Holmes had defeated CovCath twice this season in overtime and counting last year’s regional title game, their past three contests have gone to an extra session.

Not so last night.  It was a typically tight game until midway through the third quarter when the Bulldogs pulled away from a 35-35 tie and then held off the Colonels from the free throw line in the final quarter.

CovCath led 12-5 early in the game but Holmes rallied back to take a 17-16 first quarter lead and stretched it to 29-26 by halftime.

The deep Bulldogs placed four players in double figure scoring led by Arrez Henderson (11), Braeon Avery (11), Ricardo Johnson (11) and Terrance Clark (10). A total of 10 players scored for Holmes on the night.

Junior Luke Maile scored a game-high 20 points to lead CovCath.  Junior guard Mitch Shover added 13 points.

Holmes (31-2) will face Region 5 champion Bardstown in the opening round of the Sweet Sixteen next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Rupp Arena.
