i-wireless FOX19 Prep Classic Takes Center Stage This Weekend

St. Xavier-St. Edward headlines four-game event

By Ed Letsinger

The third annual i-wireless FOX19 Prep Classic at Paul Brown Stadium will have the nation’s attention on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, with a schedule that includes one of the top national high school games of the year.

The September showcase includes eight high school football programs as part of a four-game card that begins at 10 a.m. and runs all day and night.

The final game under the lights features defending Ohio Division I state champion Cincinnati St. Xavier and Cleveland Lakewood St. Edward, an Ohio Division I state semifinalist from a year ago.  Sports Illustrated has picked this match-up as one of the top 10 prep football games to watch in the country this season.  St. Edward (2-0) comes into the game ranked No. 8 in the country in the USA Today Super 25 poll while St. Xavier (2-0) is ranked No. 13 by USA Today.  The Eagles have out-scored their first two opponents by a 55-7 count while St. Xavier has been equally as dominant, whipping their two opponents by a 75-17 margin.

Highlands plays Louisville St. Xavier in a game that pits two of Kentucky’s premier prep football programs against one another.  The Bluebirds have won a state record-tying 16 state titles in its history while the Tigers have won 11.  Highlands (2-1) comes into the game ranked No. 1 in Kentucky Class 3A in the Associated Press state poll while the Tigers (3-0) are ranked No. 2 in Kentucky Class 4A.

Massillon and Moeller with their rich traditions will square off in another contest.  Massillon has won 22 mythical poll titles while the Crusaders have won seven Ohio state titles.  The Tigers (2-0) have steamrolled through their first two games by a 127-13 count and are ranked No. 3 in the Midwest by MaxPreps.com.  The Crusaders (1-1) are currently ranked ninth in Cincinnati in the latest coaches’ poll.

Withrow and Taft open up the full day of football with a Southwest Ohio Public League tilt.  The Tigers (1-1) are knocking on the door of the top 10 in Cincinnati Division I while Taft (1-1) is also close to obtaining top 10 status in the small-school divisions.

All four games will be carried live on FSN Ohio.

The Prep Classic, conducted by Reach Event Marketing, is the direct result of a concerted effort between Hamilton County officials, the Cincinnati Bengals, Anthony Muñoz Foundation, Marvin Lewis Community Fund and Cris Collinsworth ProScan Foundation to bring an annual showcase prep football event to the Greater Cincinnati area that features top prep football programs.

Tickets are on sale now at all the schools and at Paul Brown Stadium on game day when the box office opens at 9am.
