Semones Announces Retirement

Lakota East coach steps down after 36 years

Lakota East defensive coordinator Jim Semones has decided it’s time to turn the page.

After a coaching career that spanned some 36 years, Semones has decided he’s ready to make a change.

“I’ve been either playing or coaching football since I was 9 years old (50 years),” said Semones. “I date back to the days of leather helmets.  That’s a long time and I’m ready to do some other things.”

Semone’s coaching career began at Lakota Junior School (now the Early Childhood Center) in 1969 following his graduation from Ohio University with an Education Degree in Social Studies.

His other coaching stints included 4 years at Lakota H.S. (1971-74), Hamilton Township H.S. (1978-80), head coach at Ross High School (1981-83), assistant coach at Princeton H.S. (1984-92), assistant coach at Lakota High School (1993-96) and the past 10 years at East (1997-2006).  His tenure and coaching association with Thunderhawk head coach Greg Bailie dates back to those early days at Lakota Junior.

“For thirty years Jim Semones has been a tremendous friend and coaching advisor to me personally,” commented Coach Bailie.  “He enjoys teaching kids and helping them improve. Throughout his career he has been highly respected and mentored many a young coach on being professional, thorough and doing what it takes to be a good football coach.”

When asked to identify some the highlights of his career Semones responded that they would have to include the three OHSAA State Football Championship games in which he coached.  As a member of Princeton High School legendary coach Pat Mancuso’s staff, Semones was part of their State Championship team in 1987 and State Runner Up teams in 1988 and 1990.  “Personally one of my greatest pleasures was to coach three athletes who went on to play in the NFL,” said Semones.  Those players included Harlen Barnett (Princeton), Ron Carpenter (Princeton) and Troy Evans (Lakota).

Semones retired from teaching one year ago after 30+ years in the profession.  He is now employed as an insurance salesman with Kingsgate Financial in West Chester, Ohio.  Current assistant coach Steve Andres will assume the defensive coordinator duties next season for the Thunderhawks.
